New York City, An Absolute Favorite

New York City (NYC) is absolutely one of our favorite cities. It sits atop the list with London and San Francisco. We do have to add that we also truly enjoy our city, Washington DC, and think it is among the best cities to live, work, and play (although we live in the suburbs).

NYC seems to be almost a world all its own. I have been visiting NYC since I was in my early twenties and my husband has been visiting since he was a child. The city is everything you imagine it to be. Some cities are a disappointment. Los Angeles was absolutely a disappointment to me. All of the places that seem so grand on TV are not so in person, except Beverly Hills which is everything it looks to be. NYC is far from a disappointment. It is even better than it seems to be on TV. NYC is truly the city that never sleeps. Anything you want to do, you can do it there.

We love the theater and the shopping in NYC. We also love to just walk around the city. We spend most of our time in Manhattan. We also visit family. One of our favorite cousins lives in Harlem. We have done some of the touristy things like walked through Central Park, eaten on the Rooftop of the Marriott Marquis, and just recently went to the Empire State Building, as well as visited the Metropolitan Museum. Every year, we see plays on Broadway. We have seen Jitney, Motown the Musical, The Book of Mormon, Chicago, Lion King, The Gin Game, and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. We highly recommend that you buy tickets in advance for shows that you really want to see, but use the ticket center in Times Square to grab discount tickets on the fly if you do not have a particular show in mind.

We always catch the train to NYC from Union Station in DC. We have driven to NYC. We have caught flights to NYC and have found that the train is the most reliable and least hassle way to travel to the Big Apple. Driving is just tedious. When you fly, you still have to come into the city which is costly. Any money you save on the flight will be spent on a cab or Uber. In addition, it takes more time to fly and drive into the city than to just take the train into Penn Station.

Furthermore, stay in a hotel close to the things you like to do. We have stayed at the Waldorf Astoria, the London, and the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. All of the hotels are very nice, but we have settled on the Marriott Marquis in Times Square as our favorite hotel because we are within a short walking distance to the theaters. Choose your hotel wisely. Also, find a hotel chain to which you are loyal so you accrue points. We are loyal Marriott customers. So, our lodging on our last trip to NYC was free because we stayed on points. We love finding ways to travel well for less!

Whether you are a theater fan or not, NYC has something for everyone. You can sightsee. You can visit museums and art galleries. You can take long walks in Central Park (daytime recommended). You can walk around the city and see the sights. You will find some of the best food and shopping in the world. The options are endless, day and night. We have visited amazing comedy clubs and eaten at Juniors (best cheesecake ever) in the middle of the night. We absolutely list NYC as a place for me. We visit every year. We are excited to go and thrilled that we went every single time. Add NYC to your must do travel list.
